Mammals have a thick coat of hair or fur. This fur or hair keep the animal warm. Examples of mammals are horses, cows, and dogs.
Mammals also have lungs. They use their lungs to breathe. Mammals that live in the water, such as whales, also breathe with lungs. Animals that live in the water and breathe with lungs must go to the surface of the water to breathe.
Most mammals give birth to live young. A acat may give birth to many kittens at one time. Before the kittens are born, the mother carries them inside her. Like most mammals, kittens feed on milk made by their mother's body, after birth. The mother's milk gives them the nutrients they need to grow and be healthy.
When a mammal is newly born, it cannot care for itself. It must be sheltered and fed by its mother. Most mammals learn from their parents how to care for themselves. Many parents teach their young how to find food. In time, a young mammal learns what it needs to know how to survive on its own.
There are many types of mammals. Most of them have the same traits that were mentioned above. Some have other traits such as trunks, pouches, or wings. All these traits help the mammal to survive. Mammals are often placed into groups based on the traits they share.
Mammals also have a backbone and are warm-blooded.
